The 1st Department of Psychiatry of the Medical School of The National and Kapodistrian University of Athens at Eginition Hospital (Chairman: Prof. George N. Papadimitriou) is a department comprising of about 60 psychiatric beds, 30 day-hospital places, beds in half-way homes for the chronically ill, vocational rehabilitation projects, and an outpatient service where at least 15.000 patient visits are held per year. The main goal is the education of pre-graduate medical students of the Medical School of Athens University in Psychiatry. Also, the Department provides specialization training to about 30 psychiatrists at any moment. Involvement in research is also extensive and there is a lot of experience in Biological Psychiatry, Psychopharmacology, Psychiatric Genetics, Psychometrics, e.t.c., as reflected in the many studies originating from the Department, which have been published in high-ranking scientific Journals. Research is performed by the Department independently, as well as in International collaborations within the EU and other centres of the USA and the rest of the world.
The Child and Adolescent Unit of the Department of Psychiatry is situated at the Kessariani-Byron Community Mental Health Centre and it serves a catchment area of 90.000 inhabitants. The Unit´s outpatient service provides psychological support and therapy, psychometrics, parental and teachers’ guidance, treatment of learning difficulties, treatment of speech difficulties, and treatment of psychiatric problems; about 1.600 Children and Adolescent consultations take place per year. Through an early intervention programme pre-school children are assessed for speaking difficulties and motor disorders. There is a continuing collaboration with schools in the area and with the municipal authorities, through this collaboration various research projects of epidemiological nature have been made possible.
